ERIKA'S 18TH BIRTHDAY BASH

Yay! No more a kid but still a teen,
So many things still to be weaned;
But we are just by your side to guide your steps,
In tasting life's width, height and depth.
So ride on! Give it a blast!
You're 18 at last!

(POEM TAKEN FROM: http://messages.365greetings.com/birthday/18th-birthday-wishes.html)

This post has long been overdue but it's better late than never, right? :)

Three weeks ago, Erika, a great friend of mine, celebrated her eighteenth birthday. It was held at The Buffet in Commonwealth, Quezon City. The place was really nice. It had a great ambiance and set-up.

I decided to wear a blue dress to match my boyfriend's blue suit. Hihi.

The program started with a prayer and was followed by a photo op with the celebrant.

And then it was time to eat. Yayyy!

The food served was really scrumptious. Two thumbs up for that.

After eating, my high school friends and I prepared for our dance number. It was embarrassing because not all of us (especially me) can dance well but it was absolutely fun.

You can check my instagram for the dance teaser. HA HA HA.

Messages from the 18 candles came next.

I can't clearly recall what I said that time but I do remember telling her that I wish her nothing but happiness and that I will always be there for her no matter what.

The celebration ended with a song number from the debutante. She looked stunning as usual and her golden voice amazed everyone.

Before heading home, my friend pushed me (literally) to the mic stand and insisted that I sing All of Me by John Legend. I was really shy at first but I still decided to give it a try.

It was a good thing that one of my high school batch mates joined me in singing.

A totally cute and yummy cupcake was given to all the guests after the party.

It was absolutely fun because I had the chance to bond with some of my friends that I don't get to see that much anymore. It was a night filled with pure bliss and I still wish it never ended.

17: A PLACE TO BELONG

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 17

POINT TO PONDER: I am called to belong, not just believe.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "In Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others." Romans 12:5 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Does my level of involvement in my local church demonstrate that I love and am committed to God's family?

-----

Honestly, I don't think so. I love God but I am guilty of not fully committing myself to His family. I go to church once a week for the mass but I don't participate in other church-related activities. Right now, I consider myself as a church attender and not a church member. That makes me really sad because I want to spread His word and interact with people who do the same, but as what I have mentioned in my previous post, I have an absolutely tight schedule. But I'm currently working on that so I could go all out in sharing my love for God to others. I am really looking forward to becoming not just a spectator, but a real member of God's family.

16: WHAT MATTERS MOST

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 16

POINT TO PONDER: Life is all about love.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "The entire law is summed up in a single command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Galatians 5:14 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Honestly, are relationships my first priority? How can I ensure that they are?

-----

Right now, I can say that relationships are on top of my priorities. Although I'm loaded with tons of things to do, I make it a point that I allot at least a day or two with my family, friends and special someone. I'm in college right now and my schedule is really tight because aside from studying, I do different activities on the side. But I never fail to text or call or spend a day with those who are dear to me. After all, relationships are what life is all about. Earthly activities and achievements will always be there, but our loved ones won't. "You have no guarantee of tomorrow. If you want to express love, you had better do it now." This chapter comes with a nice prayer to utter every morning. I want to share this to everyone so we would all develop the habit of saying this when we wake up. Try praying this: "God, whether I get anything else done today, I want to make sure that I spend time loving other people because that's what life is all about. I don't want to waste this day."

15: FORMED FOR GOD'S FAMILY

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 15

POINT TO PONDER: I was formed for God's family.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his ownfamily by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ." Ephesians 1:5a (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How can I start treating other believers like members of my own family?

-----

The first thing I'd do would be to think of them as if they were really members of my own family. That way, I would feel at ease when I'm with them. I'd talk to them more often as well so I could understand them better and we could share our ideas and beliefs with each other. These ways may sound simple but they could definitely strengthen our bond so we could all grow in faith together.

14: WHEN GOD SEEMS DISTANT

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 14

POINT TO PONDER: God is real, no matter how I feel.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "For God has said, 'I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.'" Hebrews 13:5 (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How can I stay focused on God's presence, especially when he feels distant?

-----

"Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional." If we don't let ourselves wallow in misery, we would see that God is not and never will be distant. Yes, He lets us face various trials but He doesn't give us anything we cannot handle. So for me, the best way to remind ourselves that God is with us all the time is to talk to Him. We should unload all our emotions and let Him know that we feel hopeless but we still trust Him. According to this book, admitting our hopelessness can be a statement of faith. But aside from that, it's also a must that we keep in mind everything that He has done for us in the past. A single difficulty should not overshadow the thousands of blessings He has showered us with.

13: WORSHIP THAT PLEASES GOD

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 13

POINT TO PONDER: God wants all of me.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." Mark 12:30 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Which is more pleasing to God right now- my public worship or my private worship? What will I do about this?

-----

It would be my private worship because it's only through this that God would see my sincerity. I hope no one gets offended by this but public worship for me is quite pretentious. It's a kind of praise that some people do just for showmanship. HOWEVER, there is no "best" form of worship. What God really wants is a heartfelt praise. So no matter how, when, or where we do it, what truly matters is the authenticity and not the reaction we hope to get from the people around us.

12: DEVELOPING YOUR FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 12

POINT TO PONDER: I'm as close to God as I choose to be.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you." James 4:8a (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What practical choices will I make today in order to grow closer to God?

-----

The best thing to do right now is avoid making sins. The latter usually separate us from the heavenly father. Yes, mistakes are inevitable but a sincere apology will make God happy. You see, it's always up to us if we would do good deeds or not. But we should always keep in mind that these things that we do would serve as the foundation of our relationship with Him.

11: BECOMING BEST FRIENDS WITH GOD

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 11

POINT TO PONDER: God wants to be my best friend.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Friendship with God is reserved for those who reverence him." Psalm 25:14a (LB)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What can I do to remind myself to think about God and talk to him more often throughout the day?

-----

I would be prompted to talk to God more often when there is something to remind me to do so. That's why I have decided to incorporate these reminders into my day-to-day activities. I can put up a sign beside my bed so I would be motivated to talk to Him as soon as I wake up and before I go to sleep. I can make bookmarks and key chains as well so I could carry His word with me wherever I go. But aside from these aforementioned tips, there are tons of other ways on how we could be reminded to think about and talk to God. We just have to explore and be creative.

10: THE HEART OF WORSHIP

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 10

POINT TO PONDER: The heart of worship is surrender.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Surrender your whole being to him to be used for righteous purposes." Romans 6:13b (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What area of my life am I holding back from God?

-----

Maybe I can not fully surrender to God because I can not admit my limitations. I think this is the part of me that I'm holding back from Him ̶  the full control of my life. I want to be prettier, taller, smarter, wealthier, and even more prominent. To be honest, I feel envious when I see someone who possess all the things that I lack. Aside from that, I also want to fulfill my own plans. But after reading this chapter, I have come to realize that what truly hinders me from fully surrendering to God is my jealousy and self-will.

9: WHAT MAKES GOD SMILE?

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 9

POINT TO PONDER: God smiles when I trust him.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "The Lord is pleased with those who worship him and trust his love." Psalm 147:11 (CEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Since God knows what is best, when do I need to trust him most?

-----

I think I need to trust Him more when doors close on me. After all, He is the one who knows what's best. Of course, disappointment and frustration will creep in but I will not let it get in the way. I believe that everytime I get rejected for something good, God opens another door for something better.

8: PLANNED FOR GOD'S PLEASURE

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 8

POINT TO PONDER: I was planned for God's pleasure.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "The Lord takes pleasure in his people." Psalm 149:4 (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What common task could I start doing as if I were doing it directly for Jesus?

-----

Just like what I have said in my previous post, it would be studying. Modesty aside, the Lord has blessed me with intelligence and starting today, I want to use it well for Him. This chapter has taught me that God smiles when we use our abilities. And that's what I will do from now on. I would use this gift for the enrichment of my life and the lives of the people around me as well.

7: THE REASON FOR EVERYTHING

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 7

POINT TO PONDER: It's all for him.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "For everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by his power, and everything is for his glory." Romans 11:36 (LB)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Where in my daily routine can I become more aware of God's glory?

-----

Perhaps it would be during studying. I believe that God gives me enough wisdom to understand all the things I learn in school so I could use them for even greater matters. Maybe He wants me not only to have good grades but use all the knowledge that I gain to be of service to others, share His word, and think of ways on how to be like Christ and serve God and the people around me with the gifts I was blessed with.

MY UNMASKED SUPERHERO

Happy fathers' day to the strongest man on earth.

This post need not be lengthy because I can come up with just a paragraph to express my gratefulness for having you as my dad. It's not everyday that we get to be with you but my sisters and I are really thankful because you try your best to support us, reach out to us, and make us feel how proud you are. I would also like to thank you for working hard to provide not only our needs but our wants as well. I know how painful it is for you to stay far from the people you love. You are way stronger than Superman. You are even more handsome than Brad Pitt (HAHA). You are my unmasked superhero. And you deserve a pat on the back for being the best dad in the world.

I LOVE YOU DADDY!

6: LIFE IS A TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 6

POINT TO PONDER: This world is not my home.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How should the fact that life on earth is just a temporary assignment change the way I am living right now?

-----

Earth is not our real home. It's just a place designed by God for us to prepare for eternity. Sooner or later, we would all leave this planet. And that fact changed the way I see things now. I have realized that I should not really get too attached with worldly things and activities. I should not prioritize having everything on earth because I could not take them to heaven when that time comes. What I should be focusing on right now is fulfilling all the duties God has delegated to me.

5: SEEING LIFE FROM GOD'S VIEW

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 5

POINT TO PONDER: Life is a test and a trust.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones." Luke 16:10a (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What has happened to me recently that I now realize was a test from God?

-----

Last month, I became one of the Manila regional finalists for Miss Teen Philippines 2014. Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to the grand finals. I was really devastated that time because I wanted it more than anyone else and I believe that I have prepared enough for it and gave my one hundred percent. But after reading this chapter, I have learned that life on earth is a test. I have and I would continue experiencing changes, rejections, criticisms, and even unanswered prayers. But it is up to me how I would handle all these disappointments. I trust God for I am certain that He would never allow these tests to be greater than the grace He bestows upon me to conquer and handle them.

4: MADE TO LAST FOREVER

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 4

POINT TO PONDER: There is more to life than just here and now.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "This world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever." 1 John 2:17 (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Since I was made to last forever, what is the one thing I should stop doing and the one thing I should start doing today?

-----

Death is inevitable. But no one should be afraid of it because it is an opportunity offered to us by God to spend an eternity with Him. So now that I am certain that I would spend my forever with Him, I would cease being self-centered. Instead, I would devote my entire existence enriching not only my life but the lives of everyone around me as well. Aside from that, I would also love the people whom God has blessed me with and live each day as if it were the last.

3: WHAT DRIVES YOUR LIFE?

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 3

POINT TO PONDER: Living on purpose is the path to peace.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you." Isaiah 26:3 (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What would my family and friends say is the driving force of my life? What do I want it to be?

-----

I think most of the people around me would say that my life is driven by my thirst for achievement. I have always wanted to be on top, stand out from the rest, and achieve things that girls my age don't usually get. For seventeen long years, it has always been "me".

But this chapter opened my eyes to the real purpose of my existencefocusing on God and fulfilling His plans. So now that I have the chance to change my life's driving force, I want it to be my longing to make an impact to the lives of other people by creating positive changes. I want to lend a helping hand to those who are in dire need of it. I want to be the voice for those unfortunate people who cannot speak for themselves. I want to guide those who are currently taking the wrong path. I want to help everyone realize that the reason why we are all living today is because of God's grand plan.

2: YOU ARE NOT AN ACCIDENT

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 2

POINT TO PONDER: I am not an accident.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born." Isaiah 44:2 (CEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Knowing that God uniquely created me, what areas of my personality, background, and physical appearance am I struggling to accept?

-----

I can't help but be envious of those girls who have a high-bridged nose, silky hair, pretty eyes, flat tummy, and blemish-free face. They all look beautiful and perfect to me. That's why it's quite hard for me to accept my physical imperfections. As you all know, I have always wanted to be a beauty queen. However, since there are tons of gorgeous ladies out there who look way better than me, I don't stand a chance. Doors keep closing on me. Rejections here and there. Disappointments everywhere.

But after reading this chapter, I realized that I look like this for a reason. God custom-made my body just the way He wanted it. And I should really be grateful for I know that my physique is not arbitrary. He had a purpose.

1: IT ALL STARTS WITH GOD

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 1

POINT TO PONDER: It's not about me.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him." Colossians 1:16b (Msg)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: In spite of all the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really about living for God, not myself?

-----

The world that we are residing in right now is full of distractions. We are occupied with earthly possessions and activities that we tend to forget why we are even here in the first place. So despite all these, I can remind myself that it's not and will never be about me by having a quality time with God through praying. In silence, I will talk to Him and ask for guidance. I will pray for strength and strong will to do and be whatever He intends me to be. After all, I exist only because God wills that I exist.

WHAT ON EARTH AM I HERE FOR?

THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE
BY: RICK WARREN

Yesterday, as I was rummaging through our shelf, I saw this book and a lot of memories came rushing back. The first time I thumbed through its pages was about eight years ago. That was the time when my mom had an operation. I burned the lines to heaven just so God could hear my prayers. It was a good thing that I had this book with me. Although I'm not really sure if I have understood it fully since I was very young that time. So now that I have the chance to read it again, I will make sure that this would deepen my faith, transform my life, and help me understand the real purpose of my existence. After all, life would be meaningless if I have no idea on what on earth I am here for.

FAVICON

Noticed anything new? Take a closer look.

Yup. You are correct. I have added a favicon beside my blog's title. Isn't it cute? It goes so well with my template. Well, I couldn't have done it without the artistic skills of Ewey, my sister. So I would like to thank her for the time and effort she has exerted on this.

Just wanted to do a quick post about my new favicon. Hihi. That's all. Bye!

MY MTP JOURNEY

I was on my way to school when I heard Miss Teen Philippines' advertisement on the radio. And as an exuberant teen, I decided to give it a try. I checked their website and submitted an application. I did not expect anything because I knew that there are tons of pretty girls out there. But then, I received this:

I SCREAMED AND JUMPED FOR JOY. I was really happy that time.

I bought new clothes (yay!) and prepared well for the interview. Thanks to Tita Jhanet, I looked beautiful.

It was intimidating at first because as soon as I entered the building, hundreds of beautiful faces were already waiting in line. It was a good thing that I met Lia. She was so nice and she really eased my anxiety. After hours of chit-chatting, we were asked to move to another room to be interviewed by a panel of judges. I can still remember how hard my heart pounded that time. They told me to say something about myself then asked me some questions afterwards. It was really nerve-wracking but I was so happy that I got through it successfully.

I burned the lines to heaven just so God could hear my wish to be one of the Manila regional finalists. And He answered my prayers with this:

Tears welled up in my eyes as my mom showed me this photo. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. I never thought I would reach that far.

Days after the announcement of the finalists, we were asked to go to Makati again for a photo shoot and an orientation.

I was accompanied by my ever-supportive mommy.

I got to meet some of my co-candidates and they were all nice. The organizers handed out the pageant manual and we were oriented about the whole competition.

Another meeting was set so we could be mentored by Ms. O (I don't really know her name but she is a famous model).

It was fun because she taught us different tips on how to stand, sit, sneeze, project, and even carry ourselves. I really learned a lot. I promise to keep in mind everything that she told us.

A week was allotted for the voting of the People's Choice. I felt so loved because my family, friends, classmates, bloc mates, neighbors, and even new acquaintances supported me. I want to thank all of them for helping me reach my dreams.

A three-day rehearsal at the Body Rock Dance Studio was scheduled for us. I enjoyed every moment with my co-candidates and I even got close to some of them.

The best part about joining competitions is the friendship you build during the process. These girls are not just beautiful. They are nice and wonderful too. I am really happy that I got to meet them all.

These photos were taken the day before the pageant. We went to SM Southmall for a general rehearsal and we visited the Sun Shop after. We gave out flyers and endorsed Sun Cellular.

Sadly, I didn't have the chance to take a selfie while distributing flyers wearing my Sun shirt. But at least I have this hihi:

This was the first time that I did my make-up. It was truly an achievement for me. HA-HA-HA.

Before I went to sleep that night, I prayed so hard because winning Miss Teen Philippines is what I really wanted from the very beginning.

So this is what happened during the pageant:

Before the event started, we were photographed backstage. For our fun wear, we wore white shirt, pink skater skirt and white sneakers. I would like to thank Tita Jhanet (my ever-supportive hair and make-up artist) for making me look and feel like a princess that time.

We danced to the tune of Domino for our production number.

After dancing, we introduced ourselves and tried to make an impact to the judges.

The "cocktail gown" portion came next. I would like to thank Tita Gina for my very beautiful gown.

Then, the most-awaited question-and-answer portion happened right after the ramp. Look at how nervous I was. I could not even smile widely.

Then my turn came.

Everything was going smoothly until I stuttered. Yes, I did. When I was about to finish my answer, I got lost for words and that became my downfall. I got disappointed with myself but my family and friends cheered for me so I still had a reason to continue the fight.

While waiting for the results, they gave us Sun Cellular sim cards and freebies from Yakult.

Six candidates were chosen to vie for the crown on the 31st. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. Tears went rolling down my cheeks not because I wasn't a good sport, but because I prepared so much for this competition and I knew that I gave my one hundred percent. But I guess it was not my time yet.

Fortuitously, I had the best support system that time and they sure know how to cheer someone up. I was really lucky even though I lost. So to my family and friends who came that night to support me, I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH. You don't know how happy I was to see you all cheering for me.

*Oh, and by the way, thanks for proudly holding the tarpaulins that my mom insisted to have.

The day after the pageant, I still could not get over the fact that I lost. But when I saw this Buddhist saying, a smile immediately formed on my face.

"In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you."

Maybe this is not what God has planned for me. Perhaps I was destined for some other greatness. Losing should not make me sad. What I really need to do is focus on the purpose and not the pain, because I believe that God has a reason for every trial and downfall.

So when things don't go your way, never give up. Your dreams may not come in the same package that you have always wanted, but rest assured that it would be what God thinks is best for you.

*Credits to Erika De San Juan, Melliza Banaag and Tita Jackie Fariñas for some of the photos.
