PUSHED TO THE LIMIT

A cross to bear— this is how most students view college life. The constant demands, together with the pressure from other people, can definitely make any individual insane. But aside from the tension that academics bring, extra-curricular activities also put a great weight on one’s already unbearable burden. The piles of homework, projects, and quizzes, when combined with the tasks from non-academic activities can make a person feel overwhelmed. All these boil down to one thing— stress.

It is a phenomenon experienced by many and is usually attributed to as the main cause of depression. The latter is just one of the many effects that this adaptive response can bring. It is a state of low mood and has a great effect on one’s thoughts and feelings. But aside from that, people who experience stress also undergo physical and behavioral changes because of health complications. Loss of weight, lack of sleep, illnesses, and inclination towards vices are just some of its manifestations. Other physical outcomes would be aches, nausea, pains, and even constipation. The behavioral consequences on the other hand are feelings of isolation, neglect, and aversion to activities.

Unfortunately, stress does not only affect a person physically or behaviorally. It can also take a toll on an individual’s cognition and emotion. A few examples would be memory problems, poor judgment, moodiness, and agitation.

Having stress in life is truly unavoidable.  The burden of school works, the pressure from the people around, and even the difficulty of conforming to the society’s standards of a responsible individual all have a great impact on a student who is still trying to adjust to the changes that are happening not only to his surroundings but to his own body and life as well. It may seem normal for everyone is experiencing it but stress, when not given proper action and attention, may lead to drastic outcomes and worst, may even take the precious life of an individual who may possibly be the next great mind in history.

CRASIS

*The photo's not mine

“Just when the butterfly thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” Like the magnificent creature that opened and displayed its wings at last, the brusque girl who once got rejected because of her manly actions and physique finally had the chance to reveal the beauty that was within her all along. No, it was not grief from the negative response that created the unexpected turn of events. It was actually the longing for love that outweighed the pain of rejection.

Love indeed works in ways we can never gauge.  The sudden change of disposition, the improvement of physical appearance, and even the minor modifications in our actions are all caused by this burning passion. When hit with this kind of affection, one feels the need to adjust and make some alterations on his external features so as to look good in the eyes of the one he adores. The changes can be seen from the way he mixes and matches his clothes down to the way he presents himself not only to his significant other but to the people around him as well.

However, that actually becomes a problem in the long run. When summer is over and the once astounding characteristics of an individual have already vanished, the love that once existed between the two beings may disappear along with it. What people should realize is that change done superficially will never last. A “come-and-go” transformation just to conform to the expectations of others will never equal the lasting effect of modifications that occurred within.

Yes, love truly encourages change. But it should not only happen on the surface. What this powerful force wants a person to improve are the inner attributes that will definitely last for a long time. After all, when you love someone, you love them not for something as temporary and as shallow as their looks but for who they truly are deep down to the soul.

OVERWORKED AND UNDERSLEPT

A mental, emotional, or physical strain brought about by burdensome circumstances, more commonly known as stress, is not unusual for many. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, “on a scale of 1-10 where one means ‘little or no stress’ and 10 means ‘a great deal of stress’, people aged 18-33 are reporting an average of 5.4.” The bracket evidently pertains to people who are in college.

Our fast-paced world demands a lot from us. To be competent enough, one must not just finish at least fourteen years of study, but must excel all throughout as well. Accountancy students are not new to this situation. From the time they have started taking up the program up to the time they are about to take the board exams, the pressure given to them is unimaginable. In a world full of competition, students tend to go beyond their own capacities just to be on top. They extend their hours of review or go through intensive tutorials which lead to sleepless nights. Add to that the mountain-pile of homework and quizzes that the professors give out. But aside from academic matters, majority of these students also juggle their schedule to fit extra-curricular activities into whatever time they have left. A few examples would be running for student council presidency or trying out for the basketball team or even participating in various academic and non-academic competitions.

At first, being active is good because it shows how productive a student is. However, these kids unconsciously abuse themselves by doing things all at once. The most noticeable effect of stress is the emergence of illnesses like headache, gastrointestinal problems, and even heart complications. Anxiety and mood swings may also occur and may even lead to a more severe disorder like depression.

There are a lot of articles published today which provide information on how to fight stress. But probably, the three most effective are: eat, prioritize, and laugh. One should eat nutritious food to replenish the lost nutrients in the body. Another helpful tip is to carry a planner and stick to a checklist so tasks can be done immediately. But after going through all that stress, one thing that students, specifically those taking up Accountancy, should not forget is to have fun. After all, as the famous line goes, “All work and no play makes John a dull boy.”

THINK GREEN

PHOTO TAKEN FROM: http://www.biochar-international.org/profile_Neil_Lumanlan_biochar_stoves

Typhoons in the Philippines are not unusual. However, those that cause great flooding have become unbearable for many, especially those who have been affected tremendously. Ondoy, Milenyo, and Yolanda are just some of the most severe downpours that the Filipinos have managed to live through. But no matter how resilient we are, we do not have the capacity to withstand all its drastic consequences forever. One typhoon survivor had the same realization.  Right after the life-changing typhoon Ketsana, he immediately thought of ways on how to reduce, if not totally eradicate, the repercussions of global warming. A University of Santo Tomas Instructor, Mr. Neil Ian Lumanlan devotes much of his time making gasifier stoves and intensifying the benefits it can give. The biochar, a charcoal used as a soil amendment, is the end product of these green stoves. Studies show they can be utilized to produce negative carbon dioxide emissions which can hopefully save our planet from being destroyed by the unwanted results of our own slackness. According to the International Biochar Initiative, this newly-discovered charcoal can be used to refine soil quality for better agricultural produce; can draw down atmospheric carbon; do not pollute land or water; and can recover processed heat for energy production. But most importantly, they can enhance the ecological conditions for biodiversity and thus, improving sustainability. With these perceived benefits, Mr. Lumanlan tries his best to promote this new green technology. As an instructor, he teaches Accountancy majors how to build stoves from tin cans that will eventually produce biochars and even gives them sample products from his own business to be used in their own homes. But aside from that, he also makes an effort to travel to provinces and help farmers build their very own version of biochar-producing green stoves. Simple yet truly revolutionary — these are the words that would best describe this young man’s projects towards a cleaner and greener environment. After experiencing the drastic effects of climate change, he believes that this simple step can make a difference and may really help the people around him to change and save our beloved planet before it’s too late.

SWEET TOOTH

I've been staying in the hospital for three days now and it's really sucking the life out of me.

It's a good thing that I can finally do something fun. So for my comeback post, I would be blabbing about my previous trip to an eat-all-you-can dessert buffet.

After a very stressful week in school, my friends planned to unwind by heading to Love Desserts located in Banawe, Quzon City right after our last class. Since I was in the mood for some sugar rush, I decided to tag along. It took us two jeepney rides from UST and a bit of walking.

When we reached the restaurant, it was jam-packed so we had to wait for more or less two hours just to get in. The place was quite small and it did not have any proper holding area so it was really disappointing.

But when our turn came, we all cheered like little kids because our tummies were already going crazy. Upon entering, this is what welcomed us:

WOAH.

I have never seen so much desserts in just one table. But that's not all! For only two hundred pesos, all the sweet treats can be yours for two hours. Yes! It's an eat-all-you-can buffet restaurant. Here are some of the desserts that we have tried:

Crepe, shake, pie, cake... name it and they've got it! But for my final verdict, I would only give it three stars out of five (3/5).

As a sweet tooth, I was expecting the treats to be really delicious and sweet BUT THEY WERE NOT! As a matter of fact, some of them were tasteless and the rest was just okay. All in all, the gastronomic experience was not so phenomenal. An unlimited serving of desserts was a first so I guess it's what got my hopes up high. But for those who are not really into very sweet snacks and drinks, then this might be the perfect place for you.

MYTHOLOGY: ITS PURPOSE AND EFFECT

Our Literature professor asked us to write a thousand-word essay regarding the purpose and effects of mythology, specifically on the image of men and women. I posted it here to share to everyone my masterpiece that I have worked on for six straight hours. Enjoy reading! :)

-----

Myths have already reached into all the nooks and crannies of the lives of everyone. Although they lack authenticity and reliability, we have to admit that these stories have played a huge part in explaining the universe and all that is in it. They act as a medium of conveying ideas of how the world was formed, how humans were created, what happens after life, why people act the way they do, how certain practices originated, where laws were based, how heroes use their god-given powers, what attributes to emulate, and what happens to those who do good and evil things. So based on the aforementioned statements, we can infer that myths were primarily constructed to explain the unexplainable. They unravel mysteries that the human mind can not simply make sense of. Aside from that, these narratives also justify a culture's activities. They explain how rituals and norms were conceived. They present guidelines for human beings as well. The individuals in these texts usually portray roles that are supposed to be imitated by the readers. They basically act as role models — archetypal beings who experience difficulties but overcome them by making use of their admirable qualities. But the most wonderful thing that a myth does is give meaning to life. These stories, no matter how unbelievable they may seem, have inherent reasons of how things happen and morals that somehow give inspiration to whoever makes an effort in pondering upon them.

It is already apparent that these myths can greatly affect one's outlook in life. Perhaps that is the reason why most of our beliefs and actions today are deeply rooted in these fictional texts. A good example of that would be gender stratification — an inequality between men and women. A lot of stories show that the actions and attitudes of the characters are based on their capabilities and limitations brought about by their gender. As a matter of fact, these stories may have even paved the way for the society to make a clear distinction between the male and female persona. They have actually made the former superior over the latter.

Although the story of Genesis in the Bible is not really considered as one of these deliberately made-up narratives, it still depicts a story similar to those of the myths where women are subservient. The act of taking a man's rib and putting it in a woman's body is simply telling us that women are dependent on men. Aside from that, they were also created to serve as a companion and helper of the latter. It implies that the role and abilities of the female persona are limited and were created for the sole benefit of the male persona.

Another Biblical narrative that depicts discrimination is the story of Samson and Delilah. Delilah, who is obviously the woman, is described as beautiful and seductive. Again, it shows stratification because she has become an object of desire for Samson, thereby exposing women as a visually striking display to be looked at.

A good myth that is quite similar to that is the Panay- Visayan folktale entitled "Tungkung Langit and Alunsina". It is an account of creation that was formed from the love story of two gods. Tungkung Langit, the man, possesses all the good qualities like being industrious, responsible, loving, and kind. He is the ruler who works hard for coordination and order. Alunsina, the woman, is the absolute opposite. She is lazy, jealous and selfish. There was even a part in the story where she was described as just waiting in their abode for the coming of her husband. It gives us an idea that women are associated with the private space of the domestic, and men are linked to the public domain of work. Again, it is an utter discrimination between the two genders.

Another example is the Cherokee creation myth. This is quite different because it talks about a brother and a sister — the first two human beings on earth. Superiority was depicted when the brother hit his sister with a fish and forced her to multiply. The role of women was clearly established in this particular scene. It simply shows that they were originally intended to follow the orders of men and bear children for them.

More bigotry can be seen in the famous Filipino myth entitled "Si Malakas at si Maganda". Malakas, the man, was created first and he was the one who decided where his mate would come from. It only signifies that men always come first and they possess the ability to make important decisions.

Yes, it is true that myths are not something that we should completely believe in. However, like any other story that circulates in our society, these false narratives have a great tendency to influence whoever hears them. Now, based on these fictional texts, one can easily become aware of the image that myths have formed in the minds of the people. They have showed us that women are meant to be submissive and men are expected to exude dominance. The disappointing effects of these accounts are evident in our world today. Men have become the symbol for strength, while women are seen as weak individuals. This can be considered as one of the reasons why a lot of men take advantage of women. The latter get abused, belittled, neglected, and objectified. It is truly frustrating to see that most of the female population experience discrimination because of physical limitations which were even more emphasized because of stories propagated centuries ago.

But fortuitously, beliefs are gradually changing over time. We are finally in the process of breaking free from the common notion that our society must follow a patriarchal system that actually puts men in a pedestal. Many people are really hoping that this would come to a completion sooner so the future generation would not solely base their actions from ancient stories and thus, putting an end to previous practices where an entity must always be placed above the other.

THE END OF GENDER STRATIFICATION

Inequality has always been present in our society. Slavery, racism, and discrimination in social standings are just some of the most common examples that we know. But gender stratification for me is the worst.
Centuries ago, men were always put on top. The women, who are apparently weak, can do nothing but be subservient. A good proof for this is the story of Tungkung Langit and Alunsina. This text is basically telling us that men possess all the great characteristics  industrious, loving, kind, and organized. They are the rulers who work for order, peace, and coordination. Women, on the other hand, are the complete opposite. They are lazy, jealous, and selfish. All they do is stay at home, wait for their better half, and feel fulfilled by serving him.
But today, this is not the case anymore. Most of the women are the providers for their family. They have become more competent and equally hardworking. In fact, women have already become a symbol of strength. They, who were notioned as weak, are now the perfect epitome of individuals who exude beauty and grace even under pressure.

26: GROWING THROUGH TEMPTATION

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 26

POINT TO PONDER: Every temptation is an opportunity to do good.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "God blesses the people who patiently endure testing. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." James 1:12 (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What Christlike character quality can I develop by defeating the most common temptation I face?

-----

I have mentioned before that when I get annoyed at people who have poor attitudes, I tend to share my thoughts to my close friends. I want to stop myself from doing so but I always get tempted and I know that it's not something God would be happy about. So if I would learn how to defeat that temptation, I can prevent myself from speaking ill of others and I can finally find peace. This is what we call "self-control". It's one of Christ's characters that I would absolutely love to develop.

Before I end this post, I would like to share some ways on how we could overcome the different temptations that we face from day to day. These steps are written on this chapter and I must say that they have really helped me change some of my wrongdoings. I hope they can transform you too.

1. Refuse to be intimidated.
2. Recognize your pattern of temptation and be prepared for it.
3. Request God's help.

KATCHACANVAS

As I was browsing through the posts on my Facebook feed last week, I stumbled upon this photo:

I got all hyped up and decided to invite my friends to take part in this activity.

So last Saturday, we went to The Learning Library and met the super bubbly owners of KatchACanvas.

Ate Kar, Teacher Ivy, and Ate Precious

The KAC Team divided us into four groups. I was assigned to cut plastic cover, while the others were tasked to cover, catalog, and find the lexile level of the books.

While doing the assigned tasks, my friends and I had the chance to talk to each other and ask about the different happenings in our lives. Ever since we entered college, we don't get to spend much time together anymore. So this activity was not just fulfilling; it was absolutely fun as well.

Ate Kar, Ate Precious, and Teacher Ivy were very friendly and it was so nice of them to provide snacks for us while working. They made sure that we were really having fun.

It was past six when we finished everything. Before heading home, the KAC Team gave us certificates as a form of appreciation.

If you want to feel the same fulfillment that we felt, you can extend a helping hand by volunteering or by buying their super cute totes.

*photo grabbed from their facebook page

By doing so, you can "make Filipino education better one bag, one book at a time."

If interested, you may contact Ate Kar Abola and Ate Precious Valenzuela through Facebook.

25: TRANSFORMED BY TROUBLE

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 25

POINT TO PONDER: There is a purpose behind every problem.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What problem in my life has caused the greatest growth in me?

-----

Our financial difficulties used to make me so disappointed and there were even times when I resented God for giving us such a heavy burden. But surprisingly, it was also during those hard times when I sought for His comfort. There was no one else I could turn to so I just prayed. Those trials truly helped me grow in faith. You see, "it's during suffering that we learn to pray our most authentic, heartfelt, honest-to-God prayers." These predicaments are not punishments; they are the tools that God uses to draw us closer to Him. I can say that this chapter has taught me to be trusting and truthful at the same time. It encouraged me to stop worrying and just look to God and depend on Him. It helped me be more open as well. Whenever I feel hopeless, I just close my eyes and let Him know that it's His love that I need. Right now, I still experience a lot of hardships but I have finally learned how to rejoice and not give up in the midst of it all because I know for a fact that these things happen because He has a great plan for me and that He will stay by my side no matter what. I guess it's really true that we will never know that God is all we need until God is all we've got.

24: TRANSFORMED BY TRUTH

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 24

POINT TO PONDER: The truth transforms me.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples instead; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31-32 (KJV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER:  What has God already told me in his Word that I haven't started doing yet?

-----

"To speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people." (Titus 3:2)

I don't speak ill of other people especially if it's not true. But when I find them so annoying and I can see that they are doing something terrible, I can't help but share my thoughts to a close friend. I am aware that although I'm not telling lies, what I'm doing is really evil. Aside from that, my sisters and I still argue and there are times when we hurt each other not only emotionally but physically as well. I am so ashamed to admit these mistakes but I cannot be a follower of Christ if I can't be open with my flaws and sins.

23: HOW WE GROW

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 23

POINT TO PONDER: It is never too late to start growing.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect." Romans 12:2b (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: When do I need to stop thinking my way and start thinking God's way?

-----

It would be when problems come my way. I have already mentioned in my previous post that we experience these predicaments for a reason. Instead of resenting God for the pain, we should change our way of thinking. Like Him, we must let these difficulties develop and not destroy us.

22: CREATED TO BECOME LIKE CHRIST

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 22

POINT TO PONDER: I was created to become like Christ.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "As the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more." 2 Corinthians 3:18b (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: In what area of my life do I need to ask for the Spirit's power to be like Christ today?

-----

My parents are not wealthy and honestly, we are currently experiencing massive financial problems. Sometimes, I ask God why this is happening to us. Can't He just choose a bad person to have these difficulties? But after leafing through the pages of this chapter, I realized that these predicaments should be treated as an opportunity to become more like Christ. And besides, life was meant to be difficult because earth is not heaven. We can only experience real comfort and peace when we leave earth. So I guess this is the area of my life where I need the Spirit's power. I need strength to face all the challenges that God would give me and the ability to understand that these are the things that would enable me to grow.

21: PROTECTING YOUR CHURCH

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 21

POINT TO PONDER: It is my responsibility to protect the unity of my church.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Let us concentrate on the things which make for harmony and the growth of our fellowship together." Romans 14:19 (PH)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What am I personally doing to protect unity in my church family right now?

-----

As what I have mentioned in one of my posts before (http://klaire-thegreat.blogspot.com/2014/06/17-place-to-belong.html), I am not a church member yet. I'm simply an attender. But if I were to become one, I would support and try my best to understand the leaders and my co-believers. I think that's the best way to maintain the unity. We all have our differences but I don't think that should become a hindrance to a good fellowship. We must focus on what we have in common and let that become the foundation of a strong relationship.

20: RESTORING BROKEN FELLOWSHIP

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 20

POINT TO PONDER: Relationships are always worth restoring.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody." Romans 12:18 (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Who do I need to restore a broken relationship with today?

-----

There's this high school friend of mine who unfollowed me on Twitter yesterday. I'm not making a big deal out of that but I was surprised because she used to be one of my closest friends. I'm not sure why she did that but then I remembered that when we entered college, she suddenly became distant. She doesn't talk to us that much anymore. Whenever we invite her to events or outings, she always begs off. I don't know what's wrong. We have always tried reaching out but she keeps out-casting herself. I guess it would be easier to stop exerting an effort, but I love her and she really is important to me. So no matter how hard it is, I would still keep trying to restore our broken relationship.

19: CULTIVATING COMMUNITY

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 19

POINT TO PONDER: Community requires commitment.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "We understand what love is when we realize that Christ gave his life for us. That means we must give our lives for other believers." 1 John 3:16 (GWT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How can I help cultivate today the characteristics of real community in my small group and my church?

-----

I think it's best that I follow the tips written in this chapter. According to this book, there are nine characteristics of biblical fellowship that a church should possess:
  • Authenticity- we should share our feelings and shortcomings
  • Mutuality- we should uplift each other and help everyone feel good about themselves
  • Sympathy- when someone falls down, everyone should be there to support and help that person get back up
  • Mercy- after sharing our sins and flaws, everyone must be able to forgive each other
  • Honesty- we should be open and speak the truth at all times
  • Humility- it's a must that we admit our imperfections and weaknesses
  • Courtesy- respect begets respect and I can not stress that enough
  • Confidentiality- when someone opens up to us, we should keep it within the group and not gossip about it
  • Frequency- we should make our group a priority and allot enough time to be with the members

18: EXPERIENCING LIFE TOGETHER

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 18

POINT TO PONDER: I need others in my life.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Share each other's troubles and problems, and in this way obey the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2 (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What one step can I take today to connect with another believer at a more genuine, heart-to-heart level?

-----

Some believers tend to wear masks. They hide their flaws and sins so they would seem perfect in the eyes of others. But that's what actually causes the death of real fellowship. So to have a more genuine connection, I suggest and would definitely try opening up to the other believers. I would tell them my imperfections and confess my sins so they could help me forgive myself and avoid doing the same mistakes again. We should all keep in mind that in a real fellowship, people experience authenticity.

ERIKA'S 18TH BIRTHDAY BASH

Yay! No more a kid but still a teen,
So many things still to be weaned;
But we are just by your side to guide your steps,
In tasting life's width, height and depth.
So ride on! Give it a blast!
You're 18 at last!

(POEM TAKEN FROM: http://messages.365greetings.com/birthday/18th-birthday-wishes.html)

This post has long been overdue but it's better late than never, right? :)

Three weeks ago, Erika, a great friend of mine, celebrated her eighteenth birthday. It was held at The Buffet in Commonwealth, Quezon City. The place was really nice. It had a great ambiance and set-up.

I decided to wear a blue dress to match my boyfriend's blue suit. Hihi.

The program started with a prayer and was followed by a photo op with the celebrant.

And then it was time to eat. Yayyy!

The food served was really scrumptious. Two thumbs up for that.

After eating, my high school friends and I prepared for our dance number. It was embarrassing because not all of us (especially me) can dance well but it was absolutely fun.

You can check my instagram for the dance teaser. HA HA HA.

Messages from the 18 candles came next.

I can't clearly recall what I said that time but I do remember telling her that I wish her nothing but happiness and that I will always be there for her no matter what.

The celebration ended with a song number from the debutante. She looked stunning as usual and her golden voice amazed everyone.

Before heading home, my friend pushed me (literally) to the mic stand and insisted that I sing All of Me by John Legend. I was really shy at first but I still decided to give it a try.

It was a good thing that one of my high school batch mates joined me in singing.

A totally cute and yummy cupcake was given to all the guests after the party.

It was absolutely fun because I had the chance to bond with some of my friends that I don't get to see that much anymore. It was a night filled with pure bliss and I still wish it never ended.

17: A PLACE TO BELONG

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 17

POINT TO PONDER: I am called to belong, not just believe.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "In Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others." Romans 12:5 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Does my level of involvement in my local church demonstrate that I love and am committed to God's family?

-----

Honestly, I don't think so. I love God but I am guilty of not fully committing myself to His family. I go to church once a week for the mass but I don't participate in other church-related activities. Right now, I consider myself as a church attender and not a church member. That makes me really sad because I want to spread His word and interact with people who do the same, but as what I have mentioned in my previous post, I have an absolutely tight schedule. But I'm currently working on that so I could go all out in sharing my love for God to others. I am really looking forward to becoming not just a spectator, but a real member of God's family.

16: WHAT MATTERS MOST

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 16

POINT TO PONDER: Life is all about love.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "The entire law is summed up in a single command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Galatians 5:14 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Honestly, are relationships my first priority? How can I ensure that they are?

-----

Right now, I can say that relationships are on top of my priorities. Although I'm loaded with tons of things to do, I make it a point that I allot at least a day or two with my family, friends and special someone. I'm in college right now and my schedule is really tight because aside from studying, I do different activities on the side. But I never fail to text or call or spend a day with those who are dear to me. After all, relationships are what life is all about. Earthly activities and achievements will always be there, but our loved ones won't. "You have no guarantee of tomorrow. If you want to express love, you had better do it now." This chapter comes with a nice prayer to utter every morning. I want to share this to everyone so we would all develop the habit of saying this when we wake up. Try praying this: "God, whether I get anything else done today, I want to make sure that I spend time loving other people because that's what life is all about. I don't want to waste this day."

15: FORMED FOR GOD'S FAMILY

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 15

POINT TO PONDER: I was formed for God's family.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his ownfamily by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ." Ephesians 1:5a (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How can I start treating other believers like members of my own family?

-----

The first thing I'd do would be to think of them as if they were really members of my own family. That way, I would feel at ease when I'm with them. I'd talk to them more often as well so I could understand them better and we could share our ideas and beliefs with each other. These ways may sound simple but they could definitely strengthen our bond so we could all grow in faith together.

14: WHEN GOD SEEMS DISTANT

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 14

POINT TO PONDER: God is real, no matter how I feel.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "For God has said, 'I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.'" Hebrews 13:5 (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How can I stay focused on God's presence, especially when he feels distant?

-----

"Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional." If we don't let ourselves wallow in misery, we would see that God is not and never will be distant. Yes, He lets us face various trials but He doesn't give us anything we cannot handle. So for me, the best way to remind ourselves that God is with us all the time is to talk to Him. We should unload all our emotions and let Him know that we feel hopeless but we still trust Him. According to this book, admitting our hopelessness can be a statement of faith. But aside from that, it's also a must that we keep in mind everything that He has done for us in the past. A single difficulty should not overshadow the thousands of blessings He has showered us with.

13: WORSHIP THAT PLEASES GOD

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 13

POINT TO PONDER: God wants all of me.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." Mark 12:30 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Which is more pleasing to God right now- my public worship or my private worship? What will I do about this?

-----

It would be my private worship because it's only through this that God would see my sincerity. I hope no one gets offended by this but public worship for me is quite pretentious. It's a kind of praise that some people do just for showmanship. HOWEVER, there is no "best" form of worship. What God really wants is a heartfelt praise. So no matter how, when, or where we do it, what truly matters is the authenticity and not the reaction we hope to get from the people around us.

12: DEVELOPING YOUR FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 12

POINT TO PONDER: I'm as close to God as I choose to be.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you." James 4:8a (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What practical choices will I make today in order to grow closer to God?

-----

The best thing to do right now is avoid making sins. The latter usually separate us from the heavenly father. Yes, mistakes are inevitable but a sincere apology will make God happy. You see, it's always up to us if we would do good deeds or not. But we should always keep in mind that these things that we do would serve as the foundation of our relationship with Him.

11: BECOMING BEST FRIENDS WITH GOD

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 11

POINT TO PONDER: God wants to be my best friend.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Friendship with God is reserved for those who reverence him." Psalm 25:14a (LB)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What can I do to remind myself to think about God and talk to him more often throughout the day?

-----

I would be prompted to talk to God more often when there is something to remind me to do so. That's why I have decided to incorporate these reminders into my day-to-day activities. I can put up a sign beside my bed so I would be motivated to talk to Him as soon as I wake up and before I go to sleep. I can make bookmarks and key chains as well so I could carry His word with me wherever I go. But aside from these aforementioned tips, there are tons of other ways on how we could be reminded to think about and talk to God. We just have to explore and be creative.

10: THE HEART OF WORSHIP

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 10

POINT TO PONDER: The heart of worship is surrender.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Surrender your whole being to him to be used for righteous purposes." Romans 6:13b (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What area of my life am I holding back from God?

-----

Maybe I can not fully surrender to God because I can not admit my limitations. I think this is the part of me that I'm holding back from Him ̶  the full control of my life. I want to be prettier, taller, smarter, wealthier, and even more prominent. To be honest, I feel envious when I see someone who possess all the things that I lack. Aside from that, I also want to fulfill my own plans. But after reading this chapter, I have come to realize that what truly hinders me from fully surrendering to God is my jealousy and self-will.

9: WHAT MAKES GOD SMILE?

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 9

POINT TO PONDER: God smiles when I trust him.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "The Lord is pleased with those who worship him and trust his love." Psalm 147:11 (CEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Since God knows what is best, when do I need to trust him most?

-----

I think I need to trust Him more when doors close on me. After all, He is the one who knows what's best. Of course, disappointment and frustration will creep in but I will not let it get in the way. I believe that everytime I get rejected for something good, God opens another door for something better.

8: PLANNED FOR GOD'S PLEASURE

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 8

POINT TO PONDER: I was planned for God's pleasure.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "The Lord takes pleasure in his people." Psalm 149:4 (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What common task could I start doing as if I were doing it directly for Jesus?

-----

Just like what I have said in my previous post, it would be studying. Modesty aside, the Lord has blessed me with intelligence and starting today, I want to use it well for Him. This chapter has taught me that God smiles when we use our abilities. And that's what I will do from now on. I would use this gift for the enrichment of my life and the lives of the people around me as well.

7: THE REASON FOR EVERYTHING

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 7

POINT TO PONDER: It's all for him.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "For everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by his power, and everything is for his glory." Romans 11:36 (LB)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Where in my daily routine can I become more aware of God's glory?

-----

Perhaps it would be during studying. I believe that God gives me enough wisdom to understand all the things I learn in school so I could use them for even greater matters. Maybe He wants me not only to have good grades but use all the knowledge that I gain to be of service to others, share His word, and think of ways on how to be like Christ and serve God and the people around me with the gifts I was blessed with.

MY UNMASKED SUPERHERO

Happy fathers' day to the strongest man on earth.

This post need not be lengthy because I can come up with just a paragraph to express my gratefulness for having you as my dad. It's not everyday that we get to be with you but my sisters and I are really thankful because you try your best to support us, reach out to us, and make us feel how proud you are. I would also like to thank you for working hard to provide not only our needs but our wants as well. I know how painful it is for you to stay far from the people you love. You are way stronger than Superman. You are even more handsome than Brad Pitt (HAHA). You are my unmasked superhero. And you deserve a pat on the back for being the best dad in the world.

I LOVE YOU DADDY!

6: LIFE IS A TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 6

POINT TO PONDER: This world is not my home.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How should the fact that life on earth is just a temporary assignment change the way I am living right now?

-----

Earth is not our real home. It's just a place designed by God for us to prepare for eternity. Sooner or later, we would all leave this planet. And that fact changed the way I see things now. I have realized that I should not really get too attached with worldly things and activities. I should not prioritize having everything on earth because I could not take them to heaven when that time comes. What I should be focusing on right now is fulfilling all the duties God has delegated to me.

5: SEEING LIFE FROM GOD'S VIEW

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 5

POINT TO PONDER: Life is a test and a trust.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones." Luke 16:10a (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What has happened to me recently that I now realize was a test from God?

-----

Last month, I became one of the Manila regional finalists for Miss Teen Philippines 2014. Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to the grand finals. I was really devastated that time because I wanted it more than anyone else and I believe that I have prepared enough for it and gave my one hundred percent. But after reading this chapter, I have learned that life on earth is a test. I have and I would continue experiencing changes, rejections, criticisms, and even unanswered prayers. But it is up to me how I would handle all these disappointments. I trust God for I am certain that He would never allow these tests to be greater than the grace He bestows upon me to conquer and handle them.

4: MADE TO LAST FOREVER

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 4

POINT TO PONDER: There is more to life than just here and now.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "This world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever." 1 John 2:17 (NLT)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Since I was made to last forever, what is the one thing I should stop doing and the one thing I should start doing today?

-----

Death is inevitable. But no one should be afraid of it because it is an opportunity offered to us by God to spend an eternity with Him. So now that I am certain that I would spend my forever with Him, I would cease being self-centered. Instead, I would devote my entire existence enriching not only my life but the lives of everyone around me as well. Aside from that, I would also love the people whom God has blessed me with and live each day as if it were the last.

3: WHAT DRIVES YOUR LIFE?

THE PURPOSE- DRIVEN LIFE
DAY 3

POINT TO PONDER: Living on purpose is the path to peace.

VERSE TO REMEMBER: "You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you." Isaiah 26:3 (TEV)

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What would my family and friends say is the driving force of my life? What do I want it to be?

-----

I think most of the people around me would say that my life is driven by my thirst for achievement. I have always wanted to be on top, stand out from the rest, and achieve things that girls my age don't usually get. For seventeen long years, it has always been "me".

But this chapter opened my eyes to the real purpose of my existencefocusing on God and fulfilling His plans. So now that I have the chance to change my life's driving force, I want it to be my longing to make an impact to the lives of other people by creating positive changes. I want to lend a helping hand to those who are in dire need of it. I want to be the voice for those unfortunate people who cannot speak for themselves. I want to guide those who are currently taking the wrong path. I want to help everyone realize that the reason why we are all living today is because of God's grand plan.
